NORTH DEVON ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY CHURCHYARD YEW TREES SURVEY

An introduction

In the process of producing the Heritage Handbook (published autumn 2015), we became aware that there was no comprehensive list of churchyard yew trees in northern Devon.  The diocese of Exeter has noted the presence of veteran yew trees but nothing more.  It occurred to us that a useful project for the Society might be to compile a complete list of yew trees across the local government districts of North Devon and Torridge.  The location within the churchyard, number and size of yew trees would be baseline information. We also wondered whether there were any associations of yew trees with other tree species or perhaps with the dedication of the church.  So a basic recording form has been produced and the Society asks its members and anyone else interested to use if and follow the instructions and send returns to the Secretary either by post or by email (the forms will need to be scanned and sent as jpg files for this).

We would hope to write up the results for publication in a suitable journal.
